Tenure Track Position in Religion & Society - San Diego State University

San Diego State University’s Department of Religious Studies invites
applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or
associate professor in Religion and Society with a specialization in the
social scientific study of religion (anthropology of religion, or
sociology of religion) to begin fall semester 2016. The faculty member
will bring the methods and tools of the social sciences to researching
the contemporary nexus between religion and social issues. We seek a
specialist in an area outside the USA, including, but not limited to,
Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Southeast
Asia, or India. The candidate must be trained in the social scientific
study of religion and should demonstrate expertise in particular areas
of study and in specific religious communities. Areas of specialization
could include racial ideology, gender and equality, environmental
theology, or other possibilities, but the primary requirement is
expertise in social science methods. The successful candidate will
combine historical and language expertise with modern social theory
using their object of study as an example of wider, cross-cultural
social forces and issues. Engagement with issues of methodology in the
academic study of religion is essential. The chosen candidate will show
promise to teach lower, upper, and cross-listed division courses, and
produce a well-planned research/scholarship agenda whose interests will
enhance existing strengths within a department known for its
interdisciplinary and comparative approaches, will participate in
professional organizations, collaborate with other departments, serve
the larger San Diego community, and complement the mission and
collegiality of the department.

Qualifications include demonstrated skills in teaching undergraduates.
Candidates must possess a strong commitment to teaching excellence and
demonstrate promise for and publication. A Ph.D. in the sociology of, or
anthropology of religion, must be in hand at time of appointment.

The application deadline for the fall 2015 semester fellowship is June 30, 2015.
The application deadline for the spring 2016 semester fellowship is December 31, 2015.

The Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies – Jewish Scepticism (MCAS-JS) offers four Junior Fellowships, i.e. two for PhD candidates and two for Post-Docs, in each case for a period of six months, either during the fall or spring semester 2015-16. In well-founded cases according to an evaluation of the fellow’s results achieved so far an extension of the period of six months up to one year is negotiable. The award supports original research on (Jewish) scepticism in Ancient Times at the MCAS-JS. In this context, scepticism is understood as enquiry into (secular and sacred) belief and knowledge, the expression of doubts toward any kind of authority – raising the question of the criterion of truth (including implicit and explicit sceptical paradoxes) – and the purposefully evoked suspension of judgement to avoid dogmatism. Applications are welcome from young scholars in any field who are in the final stage of their thesis or Post-Doc research project. Fellowships carry a stipend of €1,400 for PhD candidates respectively €1,700 for Post-Docs.

Responsibilities of Junior Fellows
o Conduct original research at the MCAS-JS on a full-time basis; Fellows are required to spend a minimum of three days per week in residence.
o Deliver at least one workshop at the MCAS-JS based on the research conducted.
o Participate actively in the scholarly community at the MCAS-JS.
o Acknowledge MCAS-JS in all publications resulting from the fellowship.
o Submit a detailed report upon completion of the fellowship describing the experience as a MCAS-JS Fellow.

Eligibility
o Open to all scholars who are in the final stage of their PhD or Post-Doc project.
o It is the responsibility of the applicant to have the appropriate visa for acceptance of the stipend for the duration of the award.

1. Cover letter stating area of interest, knowledge of relevant languages, and how the project relates to the agenda of MCAS-JS, and preferred fellowship start date.
2. Curriculum Vitae, including contact information, education, publications, scholarly activities, teaching experience, and any other relevant work experience, as well as a transcript of records (PhD candidates) respectively PhD diploma (Post-Docs).
3. Research proposal of no more than three double-spaced pages, including clearly stated goals for research during the period of the fellowship.
4. A one-page bibliography of important secondary sources for the project.
5. Two letters of recommendation, which address the significance of the candidate’s work for his or her field as well as the candidate’s ability to fulfill the proposed research project. Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly by the referees to the address below; please list the names and email addresses of the referees in your CV. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that letters of recommendation are submitted by the deadline.

Job description

The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor (UD) in the comparative study of religion. The position will involve 50% teaching, 40% research and 10% administration. The position will be located within the Department of Comparative Study of Religion.

The candidate will contribute to the teaching programme (introductory and advanced) in the general study of religion, research methods, as well as in her/his area of specialization. International staff members will teach in English. Her/his research expertise should fit with the profile of the department

While we invite applications from scholars with various research interests, preference will be given to candidates with a research focus on religion and media or religion and culture in Asia.

Qualifications

The candidate should hold a PhD degree in religious studies,  anthropology or sociology of religion, or related disciplines. Moreover, she/he has to demonstrate experience in or willingness to develop and gain experience in the following attributes:

  • - a strong profile in teaching in the study of religion and qualitative research methods. Experience in teaching quantitative methods on an introductory level is appreciated
  • - a strong commitment to teaching and willingness to contribute to the development of bachelor’s and master’s curricula, with demonstrated experience in the design of course modules and the supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses
  • - demonstrated success or capacity for success in the acquisition of research funding
  • - a demonstrable interest in interdisciplinary cooperation
  • - organizational competence, entrepreneurship and excellent communication skills.

Call for Applications: European Islamophobia Report

EIR will be authored by leading experts in the field of Islamophobia Studies and/or NGO-activists committed to the documentation of racism in respective nation states.

The aim of the yearly ‘European Islamophobia Report’ (EIR) is to document and analyze trends in the spread of Islamophobia in various European nation states. Every year at the beginning of February before the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March), reports will be published online and hardcopy and disseminated among leading stakeholders, politicians, NGO’s, and anti-racist organizations.

EIR will be authored by leading experts in the field of Islamophobia Studies and/or NGO-activists committed to the documentation of racism in respective nation states. One person will author one report of his/her country of expertise. These reports will be also published online to be easily accessible. The full report will also be translated into Turkish.  The executive office will disseminate the reports among key policy makers, journalists and NGO activists from the local, national and European level. A recommended structure for a national report is to contain the following chapters:

  1. Executive Summary in native language and in English
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Introduction
  4. Significant incidents and developments in the country during the period under review
  5. Discussion of Islamophobic incidents and discursive events in various fields: a. Employment; have there been any discrimination in the job market  based on (assumed) Muslimness of a person? b. Education; has Islamophobic content become part of any curricula, text books, or any other education material? c. Politics; has Islamophobia played any role in politics (election campaigns, political programs, personal utterings, etc.) on a regional or national level? d. Media; which media events have focused on Islam/Muslims in an Islamophobic way? e. Justice System; have there been any laws and regulations argued with Islamophobic arguments or any laws restricting the rights of Muslims in their religious lifestyle? f. Cyber-Space; which webpages and initiatives have spread Islamophobic stereotypes? g. Central Figures in the Islamophobia Network; which institutions and persons have fostered Islamophobic campaigns, stirred up debates, lobbied for laws, etc.
  6. Observed civil society and political assessment and initiatives undertaken to counter Islamophobia in the idem fields
  7. Conclusion: Policy Recommendations for politics and NGO’s
  8. Chronology
  9. CV

It is recommended to collect information via (critically) analyzing media reports, contacting offices and NGO’s who combat discrimination, doing expert interviews with leading scholars and policy makers in the field.

Dissemination: Reports will be accessible online via an extra web-page for the project. In addition, all reports will be translated into Turkish and published online and in print.
